MTCF Filter Changes
Filter Changes
Recent Filter Changes in the MTCF Query Tool are detailed below by year. For more information about how the data elements are collected on the UD-10 crash report, see the Michigan State Police UD-10 Manuals located on the Resources page. For questions regarding specific changes to the crash codes, please contact Criminal Justice Information Center, Traffic Crash Reporting Unit (CrashTCRS@michigan.gov).
Advanced Filtering AND/OR Help
IntroductionAs of September 2022 the MTCF Data Query Tool supports Advanced filtering options. Previously every filter variable was by default added as an "AND" criteria, however now a variable can alternatively be added as an "OR" criteria. By allowing for OR criteria a query can be designed to include crashes that may have otherwise been removed from the crash count by additional filters.
Example
To illustrate the difference the following scenario is provided: determining fatal crashes where either drinking or drugs were involved. Basic filtering allows for the following options:
Each of the above queries will miss crashes where one but not both of drinking or drugs were involved. With Advanced filtering the query can be constructed in the following way:
This query will produce a higher crash count than with Basic filtering since it will account for crashes where either drinking or drugs is true.
Note in the above Advanced scenario that the drinking and drugs filters are grouped together. This is considered an "OR Group".
Constructing an Advanced Query
To construct an Advanced Query the following steps are required:
- a Select dropdown will appear
- an inactive Filter selection box will appear (this box is identical to Basic filtering)
- two new buttons will appear: "+ OR" and "+ AND"
- a new Select dropdown will appear
- an inactive Filter selection box will appear
- the first "+ OR" button will become an "OR" indication
- an additional "+ OR" button will appear under the Filter selection box
- a new Select dropdown will appear
- the first "+ AND" button will become an "AND" indication
- an inactive Filter selection box will appear
- two new buttons will appear: "+ OR" and "+ AND"
The above will complete the example query using the Advanced functionality. Scroll to the top of the Query Editor and the "Current Query" description should reflect the language of the query layout.
If an "OR" or "AND" button has a "+" sign that indicates an action will be created to add an additional OR or AND filter respectively.
Filter Selection Layout: "OR Groups"
Filters that use the OR operation with other filters are considered an OR Group. Note that a single filter is also considered an OR Group. In Advanced filtering a green box will appear around each OR Group. In between each filter in an OR Group a green OR indication is provided to assist with visualizing the layout of the query.
OR Groups are intended to be "And-ed" with each other. In between OR Groups a white AND indication is provided. The Query Editor Current Query language will show OR Groups using square brackets ex: "[ Drinking or Drugs ]".
There is no limit to the number of OR Groups or how many filters can be added to an OR Group, HOWEVER every Query Tool filter can only be used once whether as an OR condition or an AND condition.
Switching Filter Modes
With Basic filtering all filters can be added quickly from the multi-selection since every filter will be an AND operation. Similarly every query constructed in Basic filtering can automatically be converted to Advanced filtering. Each filter will become its own OR Group with AND indications between them.
However with Advanced filtering multiple filters in an OR Group cannot be automatically converted to AND criteria, hence filter selection will be reset.
When using the 'Advanced Filter' option. It is recommended to start with no filters selected or only with filters that are not intended to be used in an OR Group. This is intended to avoid confusion.
If the Query Tool was in Advanced filtering mode and the query was constructed without any OR filters, then upon return to the Query Editor the Filter selection will default to Basic filtering. If however OR filters were selected, Advanced filtering will be the default. The same behavior will be applied when using Share Query.
